Name: Hexadecylbetaine

CAS: 693-33-4

Feature:

Hexadecylbetaine is derived from cetyl dimethyl amine. It’s a white, waxy mixture of cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol, both fatty alcohols. Hexadecylbetaine is an alkyl betaine. They’re found in animals and plants, like coconut and palm oil. They can also be made in a laboratory. Fatty alcohols are sometimes called long-chain alcohols because of their chemical formula. They usually have an even number of carbon atoms, with a single alcohol group (–OH) attached to the last carbon.

Hexadecylbetaine is a zwitterionic surfactant. Hexadecylbetaine has excellent stability under both acidic and alkaline conditions. Hexadecylbetaine has good compatibility with various types of dyes, surfactants and cosmetic raw materials. It is stable to sodium hypochlorite, but it is not suitable to heat it above 100℃ for a long time. Hexadecylbetaine has low skin irritation and good biodegradability. It has excellent performance of decontamination and sterilization, softness, antistatic, hard water resistance and rust resistance.

Hexadecylbetaine has the following applications/functions:

1. The chemical makeup of hexadecylbetaine is different from more commonly known alcohols. In hexadecylbetaine, the alcohol group (-OH) is attached to a very long chain of hydrocarbons (fats). This feature allows fatty alcohols to trap water and provides a soothing feel to the skin. As with many skin care products, there’s a small risk of allergic reaction to hexadecylbetaine. So as an emollient, hexadecylbetaine is considered an effective ingredient for soothing and healing dry skin.

2. Hexadecylbetaine has excellent foaming ability and is used to help soften the skin and hair and to thicken and stabilize cosmetic products, like lotions and hair products.

3. Hexadecylbetaine is used in the preparation of hard water detergents due to its good resistance to hard water.

4. Hexadecylbetaine can also be used as a fungicide to kill a variety of bacteria including tuberculosis.

5. Hexadecylbetaine is used as fiber, fabric softener and antistatic agent, calcium soap dispersant, sterilizing detergent and gel emulsifier in rubber industry, rabbit wool shrinking agent, fire extinguishing foam agent, etc. It is also a synergist for the pesticide glyphosate. It is also used in the production of dyeing auxiliaries, rust inhibitors, and metal surface processing auxiliaries.
