Name: POLY(VINYL ALCOHOL)

CAS: 25213-24-5

Feature:

POLY(VINYL ALCOHOL) is a water soluble synthetic polymer, with a backbone composed only of carbon atoms and is biodegradable under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. POLY(VINYL ALCOHOL) is an attractive polymer because of its many characteristics making it suitable for various applications, ranging from pharmaceutical and biomedical to industrial uses. Of particular interest is the POLY(VINYL ALCOHOL) capability of forming a variety of hydrogel systems, which may be physically or chemically cross-linked, further expanding the possible applications of this versatile polymer. POLY(VINYL ALCOHOL) is prepared by alkaline hydrolysis. It is one of the most important synthetic polymers used in commercial, industrial, medical and nutraceutical applications. POLY(VINYL ALCOHOL) are water-soluble resin of low toxicity. The water solubility primarily depends upon degree of hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate.

POLY(VINYL ALCOHOL) has excellent film-forming, emulsifying and adhesive properties. It is also resistant to oil, grease and solvents. It has high tensile strength and flexibility, as well as high oxygen and aroma barrier properties. However, these properties are dependent on humidity: water absorbed at higher humidity levels acts as a plasticiser, which reduces the polymer’s tensile strength, but increases its elongation and tear strength.

POLY(VINYL ALCOHOL) has the following applications/functions:

1. POLY(VINYL ALCOHOL) is used in a variety of medical applications because of its biocompatibility, low tendency for protein adhesion, and low toxicity. Specific uses include cartilage replacements, contact lenses, and eye drops.

2. POLY(VINYL ALCOHOL) has been used in the preparation of multilayer active film for its antimicrobial analysis. It has also been used to study the effect of protein supplements on porcine parthenotes.

3. POLY(VINYL ALCOHOL)-based polymers are used widely in additive manufacturing.

4. Polyvinyl alcohol is used as an aid in suspension polymerizations.
