Name: Octadecylamine

CAS: 124-30-1

Feature:

Octadecylamine is an industrially produced aliphatic amine compound. Its molecular weight is 269.5, its melting point is 52.8612, its boiling point is 232.12 (4.27 kPa), its flash point is 149°C, its relative density is 0.8618, and its refractive index is 1.4522. Octylamine is slightly soluble in acetone, kerosene and methanol, and easily soluble in carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, ethanol, isopropanol and toluene. It is soluble in ethanol, ether and benzene, but insoluble in water. Octadecylamine is basic and can react with hydrochloric acid to form an adduct. Its toxicity is lower than lower amines. There were no obvious adverse effects after oral administration of 500×10-6 octadecylamine to rats for two consecutive years. Octadecylamine has a stimulating effect on human skin and mucous membranes. Stearic acid reacts with ammonia to form octadeconitrile, and then pressurized catalytic hydrogenation further reduces the enamine.

Octadecylamine has the following applications/functions:

1. Octadecylamine can be used as an intermediate in organic synthesis, such as the production of octadecyl quaternary ammonium salts and various additives. Octadecylamine can also be used as an intermediate for the following organic synthesis, such as cationic thickeners, mineral flotation agents, synthetic resins, emulsifiers for pesticides and asphalt, antistatic agents, wetting agents, fabric water repellants, surface active agents and fungicides, couplers for color photographs and corrosion inhibitors for oil refining units.

2. Putting the Octadecanamine in mixture with ethylene oxide in a molar ratio of 1: 2 for reaction at 150-190 ℃ can gives stearyl diethanolamine [10213-78-2] with a yield of 80%. Stearyl diethanolamine belongs to a non-ionic antistatic agent and can be applied to polypropylene, polystyrene and ABS resin..

3. Octadecylamine is used in biological studies for the formation of ion pairing as alternative to improve encapsulation and stability and to reduce skin irritation of retinoic acid loaded in solid lipid nanoparticles.

4. Octadecylamine is used to surface functionalize different carbon nanomaterials (graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes) for different applications which include thin film nanocomposite (TFN) nanofilteration and carbon fiber microelectrodes. It can be used for the preparation of butyrylcholinesterase/ stearylamine films (Langmuir-Blodgett films) for use in enzymatic field effect transistor (ENFET) based biosensors. Octadecylamine also forms films which can be used in ion exachnge systems. It may also be used in the preparation of metal oxide nano crystals with controlled size and shape.
