Name: N,N-Dimethyloctadecylamine

CAS: 124-28-7

Feature:

N,N-Dimethyloctadecylamine is a clear yellow liquid with a fishlike odor. It insoluble in water and less dense than water. That’s why it floats on water. If you touch N,N-Dimethyloctadecylamine, it will irritate skin, eyes and mucous membranes. N,N-Dimethyloctadecylamine may be toxic by ingestion, inhalation or skin absorption. It used to make other chemicals.

N,N-Dimethyloctadecylamine neutralizes the acid in an exothermic reaction to form a salt and water. It may be incompatible with isocyanates, halogenated organics, peroxides, phenols (acidic), epoxides, acid anhydrides and acid halides. Combination of N,N-Dimethyloctadecylamine with strong reducing agents such as hydrides may produce flammable gaseous hydrogen.

N,N-Dimethyloctadecylamine is obtained by condensation of octadecylamine, formaldehyde and formic acid. First add octadecylamine into the reactor, stir evenly in ethanol medium, control the temperature at 50-60 °C, add formic acid, stir for a few minutes, add formaldehyde at 60-65 °C, heat up to 80-83 °C, reflux for 2 hours , neutralize with liquid caustic soda to make the pH value greater than 10, stand for stratification, remove water, remove ethanol by vacuum distillation, and then cool to obtain N,N-dimethyloctadecylamine.

N,N-Dimethyloctadecylamine has the following applications/functions:

1. N,N-Dimethyloctadecylamine is used as a chemical intermediate in the manufacture of quaternary ammonium compounds, amine oxides and betaine surfactants.

2. N,N-Dimethyloctadecan-1-amine is a useful reagent for the preparation of cationic gelatin cross-linked with Tannic Acid (T006560(P).

3. N,N-Dimethyloctadecylamine is an important organic synthesis intermediate of quaternary ammonium salt type cationic surfactant. It can react with ethylene oxide, dimethyl sulfate, diethyl sulfate, methyl chloride, benzyl chloride, etc. to generate different quaternary ammonium salt cations. Dimethyloctadecyl tertiary amine can be used in products such as fabric softener, antistatic agent, and improving hair combability. It can also be used to produce insect repellents. N,N-Dimethyloctadecylamine reacts with ethylene oxide and nitric acid to obtain octadecyldimethylhydroxyethyl quaternary ammonium nitrate, that is, antistatic agent SN.
