Name: Eicosenoic acid

CAS: 5561-99-9

Feature:

Eicosenoic acid is a very long-chain ω-9 fatty acid that is a trans monounsaturated isomer of arachidic acid. Eicosenoic acid has a 20-carbon backbone and the sole double bond originating from the 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th, 11th 12th or 15th positions from the methyl end. Eicosenoic acid is an icosenoic acid having a cis- double bond at position 11. It has a role as a plant metabolite and a human metabolite. It is a conjugate acid of a gondoate. Eicosenoic acid is a natural product found in Pringlea antiscorbutica, Delphinium fissum, and other organisms with data available. It is found in a variety of plant oils and nuts; in particular jojoba oil. Eicosenoic acid is one of several monounsaturated 20-carbon fatty acids, and is used to study phospholipid membranes.

Jojoba oil is remarkable for its industrial usage, that is in engine lubricating oil, pharmaceutical compounds and cosmetics. Eicosenoic acid is also expected to be a raw material for medical supplies and a moisturizing component of cosmetic creams. In higher plants, Eicosenoic acid is a precursor of erucic acid. Erucic acid is beneficial for various materials such as creams, cosmetics, lubricating oil, biodiesel and therapeutic medicine.

Eicosenoic acid has the following applications/functions:

1. Eicosenoic acid has been shown to inhibit glycerophosphate acyltransferase, cholinephosphotransferase and ethanolaminephosphotransferase in V79-R cells. Eicosenoic acid lacks the cis-double bond and has virtually no effect on telomerase activity (unlike cis-Unsaturated C20 fatty acids, which demonstrate strong telomerase inhibition and have been studied as a promising cancer therapeutic target).

2. Eicosenoic acid is used in engine lubricating oil and biodiesel.

3. Eicosenoic acid is used for pharmaceutical compounds and therapeutic drugs.

4. Eicosenoic acid can be used as a moisturizing ingredient in beauty creams. It is also used in cosmetics.
