Poultry and aquaculture feed additive betaine

Betaine, as a poultry feed additive, has the function of providing a methyl donor and can save some methionine. It has the functions of regulating osmotic pressure in the body, alleviating stress, promoting fat metabolism and protein synthesis, improving lean meat rate, and can enhance the efficacy of anticoccidial drugs. In July 2019, the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) published a review of food additives that betaine may be effective when fed to livestock through feed, especially when the methyl content of amino acids or choline is restricted.

It can be used as a attractant in aquaculture feed. Betaine has a unique sweet taste and fish-sensitive umami. It has a strong irritating effect on the smell and taste of crustaceans such as fish and shrimp. It has the effects of strong attracting power, improving the palatability of feed, shortening the feeding time, promoting absorption, accelerating the growth of fish and shrimp, and avoiding water pollution caused by waste of feed.

Feed grade betaine is available in four different forms, three crystalline forms of anhydrous betaine (containing 97%, 96% and 91% betaine) and a liquid formulation (betaine liquid accounts for 32%).
