Birch is a deciduous tree or shrub. The edge of the single leaf is serrated or lobed, and the fruit is a small samara. The bark is white, gray, yellowish white, reddish brown, brown or dark brown, smooth, transverse crack, longitudinal crack, thin-layer peeling crack or massive peeling crack. Young trees have short, slender branches and narrow tower crowns. Growing in the northern hemisphere, birch is one of the earliest trees formed after glacier retreat. It is cold resistant, fast-growing and immune to diseases and pests. It is used for reforestation, soil erosion control, protective covering or tree conservation.
