Research has found that Crocus sativus extract may help treat insomnia

According to a report by New Atlas, patients with insomnia typically rely on sleep aids to fall asleep. However, a new study suggests that using natural supplements in the form of Crocus sativus extract can help insomnia patients get rid of their troubles. This study was conducted by scientists from the University of Murdoch in Australia.

 Crocus sativus Extract (food grade)

During the 28 day test, a total of 63 volunteers received a 14 milligram dose of extract twice a day or a placebo. All volunteers are between the ages of 18 and 70, have not received treatment for depression, and have not taken any medication (except contraceptive pills) for at least four weeks. In addition, although they all have self-reported sleep problems, they are still healthy.

When 55 test subjects were subsequently evaluated for their sleep based on the standardized insomnia severity index, it was found that those who took the extract had significantly better sleep quality than those who received the placebo. In fact, most people in the first group noticed these improvements within 7 days of starting treatment. In addition, no adverse effects were found after taking Crocus sativus extract.

Although it is not entirely clear how Crocus sativus can help treat insomnia, a planned, larger volunteer study may provide some answers. The paper on this study, led by Dr. Adrian Lopresti, has been published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.
